Renew a bank connection when access expires
Bank access under open banking rules expires after about 90 days. This guide shows how to renew a connection, what happens to imported transactions, and how to fix common renewal errors.
Why it expires: open banking regulation (PSD2 in the EEA, Open Banking in the UK, and similar rules elsewhere) requires you to re-approve account access periodically — usually every 90 days, sometimes 180. It is a legal limit at your bank, not something Aega or your data provider can extend.
- 1
Check how many days are left
Open the Banks page. Every connection shows a status badge and, when the provider reports it, a countdown such as 12 days left. A connection turns Expiring soon at 10 days or fewer and Expired when access has ended. Expired connections stop importing new transactions — nothing already imported is lost. - 2
Press Renew access
On the connection card press Renew access (it is called Reconnect on expired connections). You are sent straight to the same bank you connected before — no need to search for it again. - 3
Approve at your bank
Log in and approve account access exactly as the first time (BankID in Sweden, your bank's app or card reader elsewhere). Approve the same accounts you used before, so the renewed connection keeps matching your existing accounts in Aega. - 4
Remove the old, expired connection
After the renewal succeeds you may briefly see two cards for the same bank. Delete the old expired one with the trash icon. Imported transactions stay — only the link to the bank is removed. Then press Sync on the new connection to pull in anything missed while access was down. - 5
Let the nightly job take over again
Once renewed, transactions import automatically every night together with the other overnight updates. Duplicate protection means a manual sync right after renewal is always safe.
When renewal fails
- Renewal starts but the bank shows an error — the consent at the bank may still be active. Cancel any existing consent for Aega in your bank's app (often under "Third party access" or "Consents") and try again.
- Accounts appear twice after renewing — the old connection is still there. Delete it; the accounts under it disappear with it.
- "invalid_state" or "state_expired" — the renewal link was opened too late or reused. Start over from the Banks page.
- Signature or credential errors — your provider application credentials changed. Re-check them under Settings → Bank & backup and press Test connection.
Renewal is always read-only, and you always sign in at your own bank — Aega never sees your bank credentials. Which data provider covers my country?
